	Katherine London My Dad’s a great bloke. Really, ask anyone. That’s the first thing everyone knows about him. The second thing everyone knows is that he’s a runner. He runs. An awful lot. And he’s not shy about talking about it. In his own words, he’s a ‘running bore’. A casual "How are you?" will prompt a lengthy, detailed description of current injuries, personal bests and upcoming races. Back in the day, my father was a great runner. One year, he ran the fastest 800m in England. On another occasion, he was asked to run for Ireland in the Commonwealth Games – but he had to decline, as he couldn’t afford the train fare. My Dad came from a disadvantaged background (he worked from the age of eight) and didn’t have the time or money to develop an athletic career. Nevertheless, he kept on running. Now, five children later, at the age of 68, he runs long distance. He’s always talking about doing the Boston marathon or the New York City half-marathon. Always talking, never doing. And in his 68 years, he’s never been outside Europe. If I won Hyatt’s ‘The Big Welcome’ prize, I would love to take my Dad to all the races he’s ever wanted to run in. And, as every runner needs cheerleaders, I’d bring along the whole family to shout encouragement (and perhaps even join him) on-route.
